Car icon Title to a Charitable Organization

When a vehicle is bequeathed to a charitable organization, the organization is required to present an affidavit to the holder of the interest in the property along with the below listed documents. The Affidavit should identify the vehicle by VIN or be accompanied by documents providing the VIN for the vehicle.

  • IRS tax exempt determination letter
  • Certificate of existence of the charitable organization
  • Copy of decedent's death certificate, published probate notice, proof of payment of decedent's funeral expense, or decedent's obituary. 
  • Corporate resolution (or similar documents) displaying authority for affiant to act on behalf of the charitable organization
  • IRS W-9

The holder of the property shall deliver the property to the organization. 

How to obtain title for Charitable Organization

If an assigned title is not provided to the charitable organization, the Charitable Organization shall provide the documents listed below to their county treasurer's office to obtain a title for the vehicle bequeathed to the organization.

  • Completed Application for Title 
  • Copy of affidavit presented to the the holder of the interest in the property bequeathed to the organization
  • Accompanied document identifying the vehicle (if not identified on affidavit)
  • IRS tax exempt determination letter
  • Certificate of existence of charitable organization
  • Copy of decedent's death certificate, published probate notice, proof of payment of decedent's funeral expense, or decedent's obituary. 
  • Corporate resolution (or similar documents) displaying authority for affiant to act on behalf of the charitable organization
  • IRS W-9
