Explanation
If you are under the age of 21, hold an operator’s license or a provisional operator’s permit and you accumulate six (6) or more points within a 12-month time period, you will be required to complete a Defensive Driving Course to prevent suspension. This course must be completed within 3-months of the date the Department of Motor Vehicles sends notification to you or your driving privileges will be suspended.
Reinstatement Requirements
If the Defensive Driving Course is not completed within the three (3) month time period, you must submit the following reinstatement requirements to the Department of Motor Vehicles, 301 Centennial Mall South, P.O. Box 94877, Lincoln, NE 68509-4877:
Note: Requirements cannot be submitted to your local Driver License Exam Station
- Successfully complete a DMV approved Driver Improvement Course consisting of at least four (4) hours of instruction. The school will submit a DMV Certificate of Completion electronically – this usually takes 3 – 5 business days after the course has been completed (this WILL NOT give you a 2-point credit on your driving record). To prevent delays in this process, please be sure to provide the school with the correct spelling of your complete name, date of birth and Nebraska operator’s license/provisional operator’s license number.
- Pay a $50.00 reinstatement fee (required if the course was completed after the date of suspension) which can be paid online with a debit or credit card (an additional $3.00 fee will be assessed at time of payment). OR submit a cashier’s check or money order made payable to the Department of Motor Vehicles - include identifying information (i.e. name, date of birth, license or social security number and current mailing address). Payment submitted by personal or business checks and checks not equaling the amount due will be returned.
- At age 21 the course is no longer required. Pay a $50.00 reinstatement fee which can be paid online with a debit or credit card (an additional $3.00 fee will be assessed at time of payment). OR submit a cashier’s check or money order made payable to the Department of Motor Vehicles - include identifying information (i.e. name, date of birth, license or social security number and current mailing address). Payment submitted by personal or business checks and checks not equaling the amount due will be returned.
Exceptions
If you completed the defensive driving course prior to the date of suspension, the suspension would be withdrawn from your driving record.
