A Class M License authorizes a license holder to operate a motorcycle or three-wheeled motor vehicle. For more information, obtain a copy of the Motorcycle Operator Manual.
When applying for your initial Class M License you must bring the following documentation to the DMV:

Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Status, containing Name and Date of Birth, and Identity.

Principal Address in Nebraska (at least two documents are required).

Applicants must disclose their valid social security number which can be verified through the Social Security Administration or show proof of exemption from the requirement by presenting a valid, unexpired Record of Arrival and Departure in a valid foreign passport (I-94 or I-94A).

Minimum Age
17. Individuals under the age of 18 may not apply until they have held a Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP) for at least 12 months and have not accumulated three or more points on their driving record during the previous 12 month period.
Testing
All applicants for a Class M license that fail three successive drive tests will not be eligible to reapply until they:
- Show proof of successful completion of a DMV approved driver training course, or
- Have held a LPD for at least 90 days.
Individuals under 18:
- That have been issued a Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP) for at least 12 months and have not accumulated three or more points on their driving record during the previous 12 month period are required to take a vision test. The POP must be a Class M POP or have the motorcycle endorsement on it.
- New residents surrendering a valid out-of-state license must meet the POP requirements.
Individuals over 18:
- Who have held a Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP) within the last 24 month period are required to take a vision test. The POP must be a Class M POP or have the motorcycle endorsement on it.
- Applying for a first time license, who have never held a Provisional Operator’s Permit (POP) are required to take vision, written and drive tests. Written test may be waived for individuals who have been issued a Nebraska learner’s permit (LPD) that is valid or expired for no more than one year (Class M or Class O with motorcycle endorsement).
- If a person is unable to surrender the out-of-state License or the license is more than a year expired both written and driving tests are required. Only the written test is required when the license is less than a year expired.
A “Z” restriction will be placed on the license when a scooter only, electric motorcycle only, 3-wheel motorcycle only is used during the drive test. Other restrictions as determined by Driver Licensing Staff may also be placed on the license.
Motorcycle Helmet Law
Any person that would like to waive the requirement to wear a helmet while operating a motorcycle or moped can submit their MSF course completion information in person at any Nebraska DMV field office or online by clicking the link found below.
Be advised, any person that was issued their Class M License or M endorsement prior to May 01, 2024 is only required to complete the 3 hour basic rider eCourse provided by MSF to waive the helmet requirement. However, any person that was issued their Class M License or M endorsement on or after May 1, 2024 is required to complete the entire basic rider course to waive the helmet requirement.

* Licenses, permits and state identification cards must be issued for a full 5 year period unless:
- license, permit or ID card was issued to an individual who is not yet 21 years of age, but will be 21 years of age less than 5 years from the date of issuance resulting in the license, permit or ID card being valid for less than the full 5 year period;
- license or permit has a bioptic or telescoptic restriction (renewal is required yearly);
- CDL holder with Hazardous Material endorsement (expiration date is based on date of Security Threat Assessment);
- the applicant is presenting a USCIS document (the expiration of the Nebraska document will be tied to the expiration date of the USCIS document);
