The Driver Licensing Services division has the capacity to cancel licenses.

Some of the procedures that may result in cancellation from the Driver Licensing Services division are:

• Recalls for individuals to be retested for their license
• Medical and Vision requirements
• Social Security Number verification
• Individuals suspended or revoked in another state (Problem Driver Pointer System-PDPS).

Recalls

If it comes to the attention of the Director that an individual may not be capable of operating a motor vehicle safely, the Department of Motor Vehicles can request an individual appear before Driver Licensing Staff on a specified date and time for reexamination.

A driver may be required to furnish a statement by a licensed physician regarding medical history and present condition as it pertains to driving ability. A vision statement from an optometrist or ophthalmologist may also be required.

Recall applicants may be asked to take and pass the written test. Successful completion of a drive test will be required.

Failure to report for an examination, or to submit the required medical or vision statement, or to pass required written and drive tests, will result in the license being cancelled.

Medical

Class “O”, “M” and all permits  – in addition, commercial applicants in the exempt categories or those who hold or have held a Nebraska CDL as of July 30, 1996 not meeting Part 391 are required to meet DMV minimum medical requirements. If it comes to the knowledge of the Department of Motor Vehicles that a license and/or permit holder does not meet the minimum medical requirements, their license and/or permit will be cancelled.

Vision

Class “O”, “M” and all permits  – in addition, commercial applicants in the exempt categories or those who hold or have held a Nebraska CDL as of July 30, 1996 not meeting Part 391 are required to meet DMV minimum vision requirements. If it comes to the knowledge of the Department of Motor Vehicles that a license and/or permit holder does not meet the minimum vision requirements, their license and/or permit will be cancelled.

Social Security Number Verification

The Department of Motor Vehicles requires new and renewal driver license and State ID Card applicants to provide a valid social security number or a valid Immigration Naturalization Service I-94 document. If the applicant is unable to do so the driver license or state ID card is denied.

All social security numbers are verified through the Social Security Administration. If a Nebraska license is issued to a person and the Social Security Administration cannot verify the number, the Department of Motor Vehicles may cancel the license upon forty-five days written notice by US mail to the licensee’s last-known address. The cancellation may be appealed as provided in Nebraska Statute 60-4,105.

Problem Driver Pointer System (PDPS)

PDPS is a Federally mandated computer system all 50 states must access prior to the issuance of driver’s licenses. This system reflects the current status of past and current problem drivers.

If a Nebraska license is issued to a person while his or her license and or privilege to drive was suspended or revoked in this state or any other state or jurisdiction, the Department of Motor Vehicles may cancel the license upon forty-five days’ written notice by US mail to the licensee’s last-known address. The cancellation may be appealed as provided in Nebraska Statute 60-4,105.

Cancellation

When a license is cancelled, statute states that the license is null and void.  Proof of Identification and all tests (vision, written and drive) are required to obtain a valid license.
