I have been running my truck under someone else’s IRP and IFTA accounts but want to now setup my own account. What do I need?

Along with the application and proof of established place of business or residency, you will be required to provide a copy of the previous registration and actual miles your truck ran under the carriers you were leased to for the reporting period (July through June of year prior to the current year).

Do I need an IFTA permit, and if so, how do I apply?

You will need an IFTA permit if your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight or registered gross weight exceeding 26,000 lbs., or the power unit has 3 or more axles, or the gross vehicle weight of the combination of power unit and trailer exceeds 26,000 lbs., and, it will be traveling out-of-state.

When are the IFTA returns due to be filed?

IFTA returns are filed quarterly and due the last day of the month following the quarter.  If the due date falls on a holiday or weekend, the following business day is considered the due date.

First quarter                       April 30

Second quarter                 July 31

Third quarter                     October 31

Fourth quarter                  January 31

Do I have to file an IFTA return if I didn’t travel any miles for the quarter?

Yes, IFTA returns are required to be filed even if you have no activity to report.

When I register my new truck, will I also get an IFTA decal?

No, the IFTA decal must be requested separate from the truck registration.  The decal can be requested on-line at https://dmv.nebraska.gov/services.  Or, send a request to our office with a $1.00 for each set of decals.

Are my IFTA decals vehicle specific?

No, the decal is assigned to the fleet and can be placed on any truck.  Once placed on a truck, the decal is non-transferable, and miles and gallons must be recorded.

Where can I find my IFTA miles to file my next quarterly return or make a payment on-line?

Our office recommends keeping a copy of your previously filed return in order to report the miles as required for our on-line IFTA services.  If you did not keep a copy, you will need to call our office and request the information from the staff.  You will be required to answer questions related to your account in order for our office to release the information.

Do I need to pay UCR fees?

How long do I need to maintain my mileage records for IRP and IFTA, and fuel records for IFTA?

IFTA records (mileage and fuel) are required to be maintained for four (4) years and IRP records (mileage only) for five (5) years.

What Information is required to be kept on my mileage records for IFTA and/or IRP?

Date, origin/destination, beginning/ending odometer readings, total miles and miles per jurisdiction.  This can be kept manually or by a GPS system that is able to capture and extract all of the required raw data.

I am leased to another carrier who is reporting my miles and fuel for IFTA, but I am running under my own apportion (IRP) plate. What records do I need to maintain?

Detail mileage records and quarterly unit/fleet summaries need to be maintained to support the mileage running under your plate and reported annually.  Manual or electronic records need to be maintained for 5 years.  See   https://dmv.nebraska.gov/mc/ifta-record-keepingaudit for questions related to record keeping.

I am no longer keeping manual records and are now keeping electronic records. What do I need to keep?

You will need to pull the mileage by jurisdiction and total report by month and/or quarter.  You will also need to download the raw data information that list the date, time, latitude, longitude, and actual ECM odometer reading of each ping.  Make sure you have access to this information for the 5 year record retention period.

If your GPS is not hooked up to your trucks ECM then you will need to make sure that you have all of the required information:  Date, beginning/ending odometer, origin/destination, miles per state, and total miles.

Detail records information can be found:  https://dmv.nebraska.gov/mc/irp-record-keepingaudit and https://dmv.nebraska.gov/mc/ifta-record-keepingaudit
