NEW REQUIREMENTS

All new applicants (first time Nebraska applicant or applicant’s presenting valid out of state documents) are required to provide proof of citizenship one time.  Once proof of citizenship has been presented, proof will not be required on subsequent visits to the driver licensing offices.

Refer to the Document Verification Requirements for more information.

Voter ID

State ID Cards are free for all U.S citizens.

If you need a certified copy of your birth certificate to acquire a State ID for voting purposes, legislation allows applicants to request a no fee certified copy of a birth record if the applicant does not have a current Nebraska driver's license or state identification card for the purpose of voting.  Additional information is available at the following link. https://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/vital-records.aspx#birthcertificate

Lawful Status

All individuals applying for any type of driver's license, permit or identification card must attest to the following statement(s): I am a citizen of the United States or I am not a citizen of the United States, but do have lawful status and agree to provide valid documentary evidence of such as outlined in 60-484.04. Please be aware that if you prove lawful status, all USCIS documents are verified prior to the issuance of a license or state ID card. This verification process can take up to twenty (20) federal work days to complete so be sure to take full advantage of your 90 day renewal period. If you have visited a driver licensing office and your USCIS documents failed to verify at that time, you can check the status of your USCIS documents with the USCIS, by clicking on the link below and following the instructions. Once the DMV receives the verification information from USCIS, you will receive a letter from our office. SAVE Case Check: http://www.uscis.gov/save/save-case-check/

Effective May 29, 2015, applicants presenting a valid, unexpired I-94 in a valid foreign passport, or a valid, unexpired I-766 (employment authorization card) or those who indicate they are not a U.S. citizen and presenting a Real ID driver’s license or identification card, will be required to provide a second document from the proof of identification/lawful status list OR obtain and provide a form I-797 (or other such document indicating they are in the U.S. in lawful status).
