Disabled Veteran Motor Vehicle Tax Exemption

Approval of an application for a Disabled Veterans License Plate is not related to the disabled veteran motor vehicle tax exemption.

The disabled veteran motor vehicle tax exemption is available for one motor vehicle owned and used for his or her personal transportation by a disabled or blind veteran of the United States Armed Forces.

For purposes of the motor vehicle tax exemption, disabled is defined as a veteran who has served on active duty in the armed forces, has been separated therefrom under honorable conditions, and has established the present existence of a service-connected disability or is receiving compensation, disability retirement benefits, or pension because of a public statute administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Disabled veterans must be registered with the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs, Military & Veteran's Registry, and have provided a benefit summary showing a service-connect disability rating or demonstrates veteran is in receipt of compensation, disability retirement benefits, or pension from VA.

Veterans who qualify must request the motor vehicle tax exemption within 30 days of vehicle purchase or, if renewing a registration, prior to expiration of the current registration.  The request must be made to the County Treasurer in their county of residence at time of registration issuance or through the online registration renewal service
