A Clearance Letter is a document issued to individuals who at one time possessed a Nebraska Driver’s License and are now making application for a license in another state.  You may need a Clearance letter if you lost your Nebraska issued Driver’s License or have been asked to provide verification that the Nebraska Driver’s License was in a valid status.

To obtain a Nebraska Clearance Letter, submit a signed, written request to the Nebraska DMV. The request must include the following:

  • Full name (as it appears on the Nebraska Driver’s License);
  • Date of Birth;
  • Drivers License Number, or;
  • Social Security Number;
  • Current out-of-state mailing address.

The request must include a check or money order in the amount of $7.50 (payable by U.S. funds) and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Requests should be mailed to:

Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles
Driver and Vehicle Records Division
ATTN: Clearance Desk
PO Box 94789
Lincoln, NE 68509-4789

Clearance Letters are generally processed and mailed back to the requestor within 2 days of receipt. If you wish the Clearance Letter to be faxed, state this in your written request and provide the name of the individual to receive the fax and an accurate fax number.
